Sound of Sewing is a live theatre sewing workshop where recycling, performance art, and humour come together - and the audience is an active part of it all. Since 2003, Dutch artists Karin Arts and Mariken Biegman-van Geel have toured the world with their antique sewing machines, and all they need from the audience is a pair of legs to pedal. Children and adults are welcome to bring old clothes and take home a one-of-a-kind souvenir for their wardrobe.

The performance is part of Copenhagen Street Theatre Festival, running from 23 to 30 August 2026 in Husum, Nørrebro, Sydhavn, Valby and Ørestad. The festival itself takes place in Husum Bypark, directly across from Husum Library. Entry is free, and the library's toilet on the 1st floor (in the lending area) can be used during the festival period.

Copenhagen Street Theatre Festival is part of DIG - Denmark's International Street Theatre Festivals.

About the venue: Husum Bibliotek

Husum Library sits on the first floor above the Føtex supermarket on Frederikssundsvej in Brønshøj, and is part of the Copenhagen municipal library network under Kultur Nord. Small in size, it offers book displays, reading clubs and volunteer-run services such as homework help, a chat club and everyday advice. Public computers, printing and study spaces are also available.

About: Mariken Biegman-van Geel

From Friesland to festival stages worldwide: Mariken Biegman-van Geel turned an environmental engineering degree into a street theatre career. With Sound of Sewing - the travelling sewing studio she co-founded with Karin Arts in 2003 - she has spent over two decades transforming audience members' clothing into one-of-a-kind pieces, right there in the crowd.

Het mobiele naaiatelier celebrated its 20-year anniversary with a performance at the Open Flair festival in Eschwege, Germany (August 8-11, 2023).

Groot Heerenveen and Groot Fryslan presented in September 2023 a portrait of Mariken Biegman-van Geel, in which she told about the balance between festival life and family life in Jubbega.
