Workshop: Learn to Knit Historical Socks

An evening combining a lecture, archaeological finds, and practical knitting instruction with sock knitter and designer Birgit Kønig and archaeologist and museum curator Mia Toftdal.

We begin by examining well-preserved sock fragments worn by Copenhagen residents several centuries ago - primarily discovered during excavations at Rådhuspladsen during the metro construction. This is followed by a lecture on the history of knitted socks, before the workshop begins. You will receive a knitting pattern based on historical sources, Birgit will demonstrate different cast-on techniques and showcase over 60 socks. After the lecture, there is a 1-1.5 hour workshop where you can get started and receive guidance along the way.

Other patterns by Birgit can be purchased for 15 kr. each - proceeds go to Doctors Without Borders.

NOTE: Bring knitting needles (size 3), sock needles (size 3), and sock yarn. The workshop takes place in the Hall at Copenhagen Museum, Stormgade 18, 1555 Copenhagen V, Tuesday 20 October / 17 November 2026, 16:30-19:30. Price: 275 kr. including coffee/tea - access to the museum's exhibitions is not included.
