Holmenkatastrofen

Late one evening, residents on Amager heard a massive explosion: 11 sea mines containing a total of 4.5 tons of explosives had detonated on Holmen. Sixteen people lost their lives - 11 of them firefighters, whom the personnel at the Naval Base Copenhagen had failed to warn about the explosion risk. The fire department was fighting a blaze when the building suddenly exploded, shattering thousands of windows across Amager.

Historian Sune Wadskjær Nielsen has written a book about the disaster and tells the story of the years leading up to it, as well as the hours and minutes before the devastating explosion.
