Dutch artists Karin Arts and Mariken Biegman-van Geel run a living theatre workshop where recycling, performance art, and humor come together. Since 2003, they have traveled the world with their antique sewing machines - and the only thing they ask the audience is a pair of legs to pedal with.

Children and adults are welcome to bring old clothes and go home with a one-of-a-kind souvenir for the wardrobe. The audience are both co-creators and the driving force in the workshop.

The performance takes place in the courtyard at Karens Minde Kulturhus as part of the Children's Culture Festival Kultur For en Tudse and Copenhagen Street Theatre Festival (23-30 August 2026). The festival is free and for all children and their adults - no registration necessary.

About the venue: Sydhavnens Bibliotek

Sydhavnens Bibliotek is housed in Karens Minde Kulturhus on Wagnersvej, set in a park with animals and old trees. The collection covers books, audiobooks and digital media, and a recently added conservatory is fitted out for children and families. Year-round events include concerts, talks and communal dinners, with poetry readings at Sydhavnens Litteraturfestival and children's theatre in summer.

About: Mariken Biegman-van Geel

From Friesland to festival stages worldwide: Mariken Biegman-van Geel turned an environmental engineering degree into a street theatre career. With Sound of Sewing - the travelling sewing studio she co-founded with Karin Arts in 2003 - she has spent over two decades transforming audience members' clothing into one-of-a-kind pieces, right there in the crowd.

Het mobiele naaiatelier celebrated its 20-year anniversary with a performance at the Open Flair festival in Eschwege, Germany (August 8-11, 2023).
