Writing Workshop: Crime, Plot and Characters

What do you need to know before writing your first crime novel? This workshop explores the choices every crime writer faces: should the plot or the narrator drive the story, and how do you handle research, cliffhangers, and graphic violence? The programme also covers classic techniques - the prologue seen through the victim's eyes, the detective's surreal nightmare, the flashback to the murderer's childhood - and includes simple writing exercises to get you started or help you break through writer's block.

The instructor is Jesper Stein (born 1965), a trained journalist and author for over ten years. He has written the award-winning crime series about detective Axel Steen - so far seven books - and has ten years of experience as a crime reporter with interviews of James Ellroy, Michael Connelly, Ian Rankin, and John le Carré.
