In James Joyce's novel "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" (1916), the author casts a critical eye on Irish society and the Catholic Church that shaped the young Stephen Dedalus' upbringing. The novel depicts an Ireland under religious authority, nationalism, and social expectations, where guilt, shame, and obedience shape consciousness.

The lecture explores the conflict between faith and freedom, between the demands of community and the artist's need for independence - and how art in Joyce becomes a way out of the ideologies and institutions that attempt to confine the individual.

The event takes place in "Toves Rum" in the adult library on the ground floor and is organized in collaboration with the Danish James Joyce Society.
