Workshop on the Danish Jewish Genealogical Database

Are you curious about genealogy? How can genealogical data shed new light on history and help us understand objects in museum collections? On Sunday, August 23, we invite you to a workshop on the Danish Jewish Genealogical Database with expert guidance from Allan Falk and Otto Bendixen. Allan Falk owns and maintains the database, and Otto Bendixen is an experienced genealogist who has taught in the field for decades. Together they will share their fascinating and detailed work with the database and the many insights and possibilities it offers.

The database currently contains over 140,000 individuals connected to Danish Jewish families. It is designed to bring together Jews in Denmark, their ancestors abroad, both Jewish and non-Jewish spouses and parents in one unified structure. Due to archive law, data protection regulations, and other considerations, the online version of the database does not display living persons or those born less than 100 years ago. But what can you use the database for? Genealogy is important for museum work. Thomas Egebæk is curator at the Danish Jewish Museum and will explain how he uses the database when receiving new object donations for the museum's collection. The database can be used to identify people and connections, making history more precise.

You are welcome to bring your laptop so you can try searching the database yourself. All members of the Society for Danish Jewish History have access to the database.
