Copenhagen between city, water and climate - August 27, 1:00 PM

Ten years ago, Copenhageners inaugurated a new area in the heart of Frederiksstaden with Ofelia Plads and an underground car park for 500 vehicles. The project created a new public space for urban life and experiences between Nyhavn, Amalienborg and the Royal Playhouse. In close coordination, Sankt Annæ Plads and the surrounding streets were renovated, traffic-calmed and climate-proofed. Realdania By & Byg Klubben now invites you on a 10-year anniversary tour of the area. We examine how Copenhagen has not only gained new squares, but also a new connection between Frederiksstaden and the harbour - and a public space that can withstand storm surge and extreme rainfall while changing character with the seasons and events. Along the way, we explore the architectural qualities of the urban spaces: paving, planting, scale, materials, water features and the transition between historic city and modern harbour. We also venture beneath the harbour surface in the car park under Kvæsthusmolen, which was essential for freeing up the public space above for people, gathering and culture. The tour highlights the gains Copenhagen has achieved over the past 10 years: more space for urban life, better access to the harbour, climate protection in historic surroundings and a new understanding of how infrastructure can positively contribute to the city's architectural quality.
