The Occupation Period at Bispebjerg Cemetery

Guided walk with historian Stefan Gjelstrup Sørensen

Bispebjerg Cemetery is one of the places in Copenhagen where many different traces of the occupation period 1940-1945 can be found. On this guided walk, we take a closer look at some of them and at the people, events and stories connected to the cemetery. Along the way we pass, among other things, memorials, grave monuments and special sections that tell about: specific resistance fighters' actions and fates and the resistance struggle in general; the protection of freedom fighters' graves after the war; the deportation of Danish police; the collapse of the collaboration policy; Soviet soldiers who died in Denmark; the bombing of the Shell House; concentration camps and the fate of Danish prisoners; the many German refugees who came to Denmark in the final months of the war.

The walk is not only about individual graves and memorials, but also about how the occupation period has been remembered and marked at the cemetery over time.

About the guide

Stefan Gjelstrup Sørensen is a historian specializing in the occupation period. He works daily as a teacher and guide at Mindelunden in Ryvangen and has previously been employed by Copenhagen Cemeteries, where he worked with the protected freedom fighters' graves, among other things. He also has many years of experience as a guide and lecturer.

Meeting point: Inside the main entrance to Bispebjerg Cemetery at Frederiksborgvej 125. I will be standing on the small patch of grass to the left when you enter through the main entrance.
