Bark Tanning - Make Your Own Leather — Nørå, Bramming

Bark tanning is a three-evening workshop where you learn to tan leather from raw hide using bark. The ticket covers all three evenings, and attendance at all three is necessary to complete the project. The dates are Wednesday 9/9, Wednesday 7/10, and Friday 6/11. Wednesdays run from 5 p.m. to approximately 9 p.m. - Friday can start a bit earlier by arrangement.

On the first evening, fresh hide is cleaned of skin and hair, and we harvest bark, which is placed in a bath with the hides. On the second evening, the hides are treated with fat and worked until soft and elastic. On the third evening, we sew a small pouch or similar from the leather we have tanned ourselves.

No prior experience with tanning or leatherwork is necessary. Softening and sewing are somewhat hard on the hands, so if you have problems with arthritis or similar, the workshop is not suitable for you. The first evening is messy - bring old clothes, rubber gloves, and an apron. All three evenings take place in a forest near Bramming, partly outdoors and partly in a hut with a wood-burning stove. Soup is prepared over a fire each evening.

You are welcome even if you have participated in the workshop before. Questions can be sent to kvinder.under.aaben.himmel@gmail.com - regards Kamilla and Louise.
