The Beaded Collar in Knitting - A Greenlandic Source of Inspiration

In 1930, the knitting pattern "Eskimogenseren" by Anniche Sibbern Bøhn appeared in a Norwegian women's magazine. Twenty-six years later, it resurfaced in an Icelandic women's magazine and became one of the early foundations for lopapeysa - the classic Icelandic wool sweater. This event traces the pearl collar's journey as inspiration across the Nordic region: from Greenland to Norway, on to Iceland, and back again in new interpretations.

Arctic consultant Ivalo Olsvig introduces the Greenlandic pearl collar and explores the significance of the pearls, the symbolism of the colours, and the collar's development over time. Historian Sigrún Elíasdóttir explains how the pearl collar's formal language found its way from a Norwegian knitting pattern into an Icelandic context. Finally, designer Lisa Sólrun Christiansen presents her work designing wool sweaters inspired by the Greenlandic pearl collar - bringing the inspiration full circle in a contemporary form.
