WORKSHOP - Design Your Own Mittens

In this workshop you design your own mittens from scratch: you choose the pattern technique for the cuff, determine the thumb shape, and combine colours and patterns for the hand.

The workshop begins with an introduction to the history of mittens from the 1300s onwards - how they have carried practical, cultural and personal significance. You'll then learn the construction of mittens part by part: the cuff and its techniques, the thumb with or without a gusset, and the top shaped with a flat or rounded decrease. The back of the hand has room for decorative patterns, while the palm can be kept simpler. You'll also learn to calculate a size based on your knitting tension, so the mittens fit your hand perfectly.

The instructor brings inspiration mittens, pattern templates and a compendium with pattern templates. Extra coloured pencils and sharpeners are available. You should bring your own pattern ideas, a regular pencil, an eraser and at least two coloured pencils in clear contrasting colours.

Duration: 2 hours and 45 minutes. Max 20 places.
