Jette - Voices of the Street — Østerbro, Gunnar Nu Hansens Plads, Copenhagen

At 57, Jette became homeless on Østerbro - sleeping in parks. Before that, she had worked, raised three children, and trusted the welfare system. Cancer treatment led to sick leave, then unemployment benefits. She began collecting bottles to afford food for herself and her cat. When corona hit, the bottle deposits dried up. She asked the municipality for help with rent. They refused - and eight months later, she stood in Fælledparken with a suitcase and cat, evicted from her apartment.

The park where she once took Sunday walks became her living room and bedroom. The swimming hall served as a bathroom. She spent enormous energy hiding her situation and slowly built a daily routine. Today she lives in a shelter - now in her fourth year. The 2,000 kroner she needed for rent back then has since cost the welfare system 2.8 million kroner.

Jette now works with Voices of the Street and other organizations for vulnerable people. On this tour, she shows the beautiful Østerbro from an angle few know.
