New Jungle Orchestra at Sommerladen · Sommerladen, Espergærde
Description was written before the event

Sommerladen closes the season with a concert by New Jungle Orchestra. The orchestra works across a broad musical spectrum - from tightly composed sequences to free, improvised passages, from poignant beauty to bubbling joy, driven by raw rhythmic grooves.

NJO line-up:
Pierre Dørge: conductor & guitar
Gunnar Halle: trumpet
Anders Banke: soprano & tenor saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet
Kenneth Agerholm: trombone
Irene Becker: piano & synthesizer
Thommy Andersson: double bass
Ayi Solomon: African percussion
Martin Andersen: drums

The orchestra was formed in 1980 and achieved international breakthrough at the Chicago Jazz Festival in 1986, where the 12 musicians were selected as the year's innovation on the European jazz scene. Since then, NJO has performed over 2,500 concerts in more than 60 countries - from Carnegie Hall in New York and the National Theatre in Pretoria for President Nelson Mandela to Akasaka Palace in Tokyo for Japanese Emperor Akihito. Over the years, the orchestra has collaborated with Yusef Lateef, John Tchicai, Johnny Dyani, Horace Parlan, Palle Mikkelborg, Marilyn Mazur, Povl Dissing, Hanne Boel, Hugh Masakela and James Blood Ulmer, among others.

Sommerladen is a jazz and world music venue in Espergærde, where musician and composer Katrine Suwalski invites audiences to concerts in her barn. Visual artist and jazz musician Pernille Bevort exhibits her works in the venue at the same time. Tickets cost 200 kr. and are available via Billetto or at the door. The concerts are supported by the Danish Arts Foundation, the Ben Webster Foundation, KODA and DMF.
