Lecture at Lejre Museum: Viking Age Figures - More Than Decoration?
Lejre Museum | Kongerigets Vugge, Gammel Lejre · 90 kr. · ≈ 12 €
Marianne Hem Eriksen, professor of Viking Age studies at the National Museum, gives a lecture at Lejre Museum on Wednesday, 30 September, 19:00-21:00 (doors open from 18:30).
The lecture is based on a new study of which Eriksen is the lead author. Through microscopic analysis of wear marks and damage on ten figures from Viking Age Sweden, the study challenges the common view of these figures as primarily women's jewellery. The analyses show they were used in far more diverse ways: one figure was deliberately beheaded, others may have changed hands across generations, and some appear to have been hung up and displayed.
The focus thus shifts from the figures' symbolism to their actual use in people's lives.
Tickets cost 90 kr. (+ booking fee) and are purchased on Billetto. Lejre Museum, Orehøjvej 4B, 4320 Lejre.
