Workshop in Japanese Embroidery and Mending — Godsbanens tekstilværksted, Aarhus

Japanese sashiko embroidery and boro mending meet in this 3-hour workshop at Godsbanens tekstilværksted. Both techniques celebrate imperfection and wear - and work best at a quiet, meditative pace.

During the workshop you'll get an introduction to the philosophy and history behind sashiko and boro, learn the simple running stitches that build patterns and rhythm, and practice drawing sashiko patterns directly onto fabric. You'll also learn to compose patches in boro aesthetics and get inspiration for how worn or dull clothing can be mended and transformed into something personal.

YUME.ITO provides sashiko needles, thread, sample fabric and textile scraps for patches - and Japanese tea and a small sweet treat are served. Feel free to bring a beloved (perhaps worn) piece of clothing, preferably cotton or denim. The workshop is open to everyone from age 10 and up, and no prior experience is needed.

Access to the workshop is easiest via the passage on Kjeld Tolstrups Gade 3, 8000 Aarhus C. There is room for a maximum of 22 people, and the fee is refunded in case of cancellation. Questions can be sent to kontakt@yumeito.dk - or follow YUME.ITO on Instagram for more.

The instructor is Ida Christoffersen behind the upcycling brand YUME.ITO, who based on teaching experience in Japan works with Japanese craft traditions and exclusively discarded textiles. The name Yume.ito is composed of the Japanese words yume (夢) - dream - and ito (糸) - thread.
