Raku Workshop with Manuel Canu, 7.10 + 24.10
Baggården ved Cph Skatepark, Copenhagen · 880 kr. · ≈ 118 €
This two-day raku ceramics course is led by ceramic designer Manuel Canu, who has worked with sculptural ceramics for many years and exhibited internationally. He has studied and worked in England and now runs a ceramic studio and gallery in Copenhagen together with a group of artists.
Day 1 - Modelling - takes place on 7 October 2026, 17:00-21:00 at Vesterbro Library and Cultural Centre, Lyrskovgade 2-4, 4th floor. Manuel introduces participants to various modelling techniques for creating both sculptural and functional pieces. Day 2 - Glazing and raku firing - takes place on 24 October 2026, 10:00-17:00 in the courtyard behind Cph Skatepark, Enghavevej 80, 2450 Copenhagen V. The day begins with decoration and glazing and ends with firing in special raku gas kilns.
The raku process involves removing the glowing pieces from the kiln at 1000 degrees and placing them in a layer of sawdust. The sudden temperature change causes the glaze to crackle, and the carbon from the sawdust colours the unglazed cracks black - with copper glazes, metallic surfaces can also develop. Finally, the pieces are dipped in cold water and scrubbed clean, and only then does the result reveal itself.
The entire firing day takes place outdoors with considerable smoke, so wear practical clothes that can withstand weather and smoke, and use closed shoes. Bring your own food and drink as well as something to transport the finished pieces in. The group is limited to a maximum of 8 participants. The price is 880 kr. and includes 2 kg of clay and a selection of glazes. Note that tickets cannot be refunded from 14 days before the course starts. Registered participants will receive an email with practical information.
