Moments from a Time of Change - Exhibition Lecture by Mette Sandbye — Nordatlantens Brygge, Copenhagen

Mette Sandbye presents a lecture based on the exhibition DAAMANI - back then in East Greenland and her catalogue article "Washing Up, Christmas Decorations and Welcoming Smiles". She examines Arĸaluk Bianco's photographs from 1950s-60s East Greenland from a photographic and cultural-historical perspective - images that depict Greenlandic everyday life from within, taken by a Greenlandic 'insider' during a period that historically has been primarily documented through the gaze of outsiders, especially Danes.

The lecture is in Danish and lasts approximately 60 minutes including questions. The hall opens 30 minutes before the start, and seating is unreserved. The ticket also grants access to the venue's other exhibitions. Members of Nordatlantens Friends receive a 25% discount - tickets must be presented together with a valid membership card at the entrance. Please note that Nordatlantens Brygge does not refund purchased event tickets.

Mette Sandbye is a professor at the Institute for Art and Cultural Studies at the University of Copenhagen and has been an art critic at Weekendavisen since 1995. Her specialties are contemporary art and the history, theory and practice of photography. She has written, among other works, "Monuments. Time and Memory in Photography" (2001), "Tedious Pictures. Photography's Snapshot Aesthetics" (2007), "Danish Photography History" (2004), "Manual for Danish Contemporary Art" (2006, with Lisbeth Bonde) and "From Instamatic to Instagram. Family Album Stories" (2025).

The catalogue article can be read on p. 46 in the catalogue (available online). Read more about the exhibition at nordatlantens.dk/daamani
