Klub Klassisk: Carl Nielsen - Symphony No. 3
Klub Klassisk explores Carl Nielsen's third symphony, "Sinfonia Espansiva", a work where singers perform wordless solos with the orchestra.
Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) is Denmark's most prominent composer, recognised internationally for his six symphonies and the operas Saul og David and Maskarade - the latter, from 1906, regarded as Denmark's national opera. Born into a poor family on Funen, he went on to become a violinist in the Royal Danish Orchestra, a conductor, and eventually director of the Royal Danish Academy of Music. His music ranges from late Romanticism to a bold personal modernism, and his songs remain a living part of Danish cultural life.
