Danish String Quartet
The Danish String Quartet performs at Gammelør in Copenhagen.
The Danish String Quartet is a Danish-Norwegian chamber ensemble that debuted at the Copenhagen Summer Festival in 2002, comprising violinists Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen and Frederik Øland, violist Asbjørn Nørgaard, and Norwegian cellist Fredrik Schøyen Sjölin. Three of the four members first met as children at a Danish music summer camp and later studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. The quartet has built an international reputation for pairing classical repertoire with Nordic folk music, recording for ECM Records. In June 2025, they became the first ensemble ever to receive the Léonie Sonning Music Prize.
Danish String Quartet received the Léonie Sonning Music Prize 2025 - as the first ensemble in the prize's history - at a ceremony in Copenhagen, where the prize was presented by the King of Denmark.
The quartet's latest album Keel Road was released on ECM Records in August 2024 and was named one of the year's best classical albums by The New York Times and nominated for the BBC Music Magazine Award 2025.
In April 2026, the quartet performed a coast-to-coast tour in the USA together with the Danish Girls' Choir, including a New York premiere of David Lang's newly composed work in wildness at Carnegie Hall on April 17.
The quartet toured in November 2025 in the USA with a program consisting of, among others, Jonny Greenwood, Beethoven and Stravinsky combined with their own folk music arrangements.
In February 2026, the quartet performed an East Coast tour in the USA with repertoire including, among others, Schnittke, Beethoven, Ravel and Mozart.
