Is the Freedom of Books Under Threat? - Opening Event #BannedBooks
Opening event for the #BannedBooks campaign with four speakers discussing censorship, book bans and freedom of expression. Free, but requires a ticket.
Kasey Meehan is the Director of the Freedom to Read program at PEN America, where she has led efforts to defend students' and communities' access to literature in schools and public libraries since 2022. She is the lead author of the annual "Banned in the USA" report series, which tracks book bans across U.S. public schools, and is a regular commentator in outlets including The New York Times, NPR, and TIME. Meehan has also advised on state legislation and contributed to the documentary film The Librarians.
PEN America's new report "Facts & Fiction" documents a doubling of censorship targeting non-fiction in American schools, including biographies and historical works.
Meehan commented on a court decision that overturned Missouri's book ban law, which had led to bans on hundreds of books in the state's schools.
PEN America's annual report for the 2024-25 school year recorded 6,870 book bans across 23 states and 87 school districts in the USA.
Meehan warned that book bans are not declining: PEN America already tracked new bans in the 2025-26 school year, while the annual report had not yet been published.
PEN America joined as a plaintiff in a federal lawsuit against Rutherford County Board of Education in Tennessee over unlawful book removals from schools.
