Morten Messerschmidt (born 1980) is the leader of the Danish People's Party and a trained lawyer. He has served in the Folketing since 2005, with a decade as a Member of the European Parliament (2009-2019), during which he set a Danish record of 465,758 personal votes at the 2014 EP election. Since taking over as party leader in 2022, he has steered the party in a national-conservative direction and remains one of the most prominent voices in Danish political debate.
The lawsuit in which Messerschmidt has sued the leader of the Danish Social Liberal Party Martin Lidegaard for defamation began at the Court on Frederiksberg in August 2026.
On 6 March 2026, Messerschmidt published the book 'Danish Spring - From Crisis to Solidarity', which deals with the reconstruction of the Danish People's Party and his political vision.
Messerschmidt was admitted to the Presidium of the Folketing from 14 April 2026.
