Citadellet

Copenhagen

About the venue

Kastellet - officially Citadellet Frederikshavn - is a 17th-century star fortress and one of the best-preserved military fortifications in Northern Europe. Christian IV began construction in 1624, and after the Swedish siege of Copenhagen in 1658-60, Dutch engineer Henrik Rüse rebuilt and extended it into its current pentagonal form. Within the ramparts stand the Citadel Church (1704) and a still-functioning windmill. The site remains an active military area but is also open to the public as a park and historic monument.
