Gisselfeld Kloster

Copenhagen

About the venue

Gisselfeld Kloster is one of Denmark's best-preserved Renaissance castles, built between 1547 and 1575 by Lord High Steward Peder Oxe in southern Zealand. Since 1755 the estate has operated as a noble convent under the Danneskiold-Samsøe family. The 40-hectare castle park, laid out as an English landscape garden in the 19th century, contains botanical rarities and carp ponds - and it was here that H.C. Andersen conceived the idea for "The Ugly Duckling". During the season guided castle tours are on offer, and markets, cultural festivals and family events take place throughout the year.
