Summer 1313 - When Horsens Became the Centre of Peasant Revolt, Power Struggles, and the King's Wrath

In August 1313, 25 peasants were hanged in Horsens as punishment for their participation in a peasant revolt against King Erik Menved. But the uprising was far more than a local dispute over taxes - it was intertwined with major political power struggles over the monarchy in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, and with defiant nobles and dukes who found a temporary solution through a major conflict at Horsens that same year.

Museum director Karsten M. Sørensen uses the events of 1313 as his starting point in this lecture, painting a picture of the medieval political world, where local peasant grievances and Nordic great-power politics collided.
