Livestreaming: Seaweed

Seaweed exists in countless forms, colours and sizes beneath the ocean surface. Large kelp forests along the world's coasts play a crucial role in marine ecosystems, much like forests on land: seaweed provides food and shelter for marine organisms, absorbs nutrients and CO2, releases oxygen and slows ocean acidification.

Humans have used seaweed for thousands of years - for food, animal feed, fertilizer, gunpowder and materials. Today, seaweed emerges as a potential answer to the climate crisis, food crisis and biodiversity crisis, but whether it lives up to the hype is one of the questions this lecture addresses.

Senior researcher in marine ecology Annette Bruhn explores what seaweed and algae actually are, how they biologically differ from plants and animals, and which cultivation methods are used - both at sea and on land. Seaweed product samples will be served during the lecture.
