The Mediterranean is often described as the world's deadliest migration route and has claimed an estimated 25,500 migrant lives since 2000. The lecture examines recent refugee graphic novels depicting dangerous journeys toward "Fortress Europe" - including Sergio Nazzaro and Luca Ferrara's Mediterraneo, Armin Greder's The Mediterranean, as well as Illegal (Colfer, Donkin and Rigano, 2018) and Zenobia (Durr and Horseman, 2018).

Drawing on the field of Blue Humanities, Banerjee investigates how the graphic and affective representation of marine environments - which seem assigned the role of guardian of the boundary between self and Other, between citizen and migrant - both resists human manipulation of the environment and awakens empathy for human migrants as well as the non-human environment.
