Themed Evening: New Jewish Literature from Latin America
On Thursday, September 24, 2026, from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM, three Latin American authors gather for a conversation at Det Jødiske Hus, Krystalgade 12, Copenhagen. The evening is held in English and moderated by Adam Solovej, cand.mag. in contemporary culture. Admission: 120 kr. (fee included).
All three authors have a Jewish background or perspective in their work, and their new novels are published in Danish in 2026. The books portray women from Argentina, Brazil, and Spain.
Ariana Harwicz - Die My Beloved centers on a woman's fierce resistance to the traditional maternal role: trapped in an isolated existence and deep postpartum depression, the protagonist struggles against her own dark instincts and the world's expectations. The novel was published in 2012, longlisted for the Man Booker International Prize, and translated into over thirty languages. In 2025, it was adapted into a film by Lynne Ramsay starring Jennifer Lawrence with Martin Scorsese as producer - the film premiered at Cannes and was in Danish cinemas last winter. Harwicz is an Argentine author based in France.
Tatiana Salem Levy - The Key to the House tells of a Jewish family fleeing Turkey to Brazil, managing to take only the house key with them. After her mother's death, the protagonist receives the key to her grandfather's old house in Izmir and embarks on a journey - both inner and outer - to rediscover her roots in a narrative that blends fiction and memory. The book was published in 2007 and won the São Paulo Prize for Best Debut Novel in 2008. Salem Levy is a Brazilian author based in Portugal.
Andrés Neuman - Until It Begins to Shine tells the story of philologist and librarian María Moliner, who secretly spent 16 years at her dining table writing the monumental reference work Diccionario de uso del español - still known as the "Moliner Dictionary" - under Franco's regime in the 1950s and 60s in a heavily male-dominated academic environment. The book was published in Spanish in 2025 to great critical acclaim. Neuman is an Argentine author.
