Author event with Thomas Korsgaard, discussing his new novel "Kransekageleverandørerne" (The Kransekagle Suppliers) in conversation with Puk Qvortrup.
The novel explores the love between a mother and son, and the struggle to break free from the constraints of poverty and prejudice. At the heart of the story is 11-year-old Tommy Sørensen's kitchen, where family life unfolds: arguments and serious conversations between his parents Carina and Henning, visits from Aunt Bettina with her herbal teas and advice, and chaotic mornings where younger siblings fight over the last of the jam while Tommy has a stomachache and refuses to go to school. When Tommy's frequent sick days cost Carina her job as a cleaner, the kitchen becomes the setting for something new - it turns out that Tommy's mother has hidden talents.
Kransekageleverandørerne is a portrait of a woman told through a child's eyes: a story about impossible circumstances and boundless imagination, about poverty, pride, craftsmanship and determination, and how a woman society overlooks can be her son's hero.
Thomas Korsgaard (born 1995) writes novels, short stories, plays and children's books. He is best known for the Tue trilogy, which begins with "Hvis der skulle komme et menneske forbi" (If Someone Should Come By). He has received the Otto B. Lindhardt Prize and De Gyldne Laurbær, and has had a short story published in The New Yorker.
