Public Lecture in Natural Science: Quantum Computers

The world of atoms and molecules is governed by quantum physics, where particles seemingly can exist in multiple places at once, and measurements always yield random results. Quantum physics revolutionized physics at the beginning of the 20th century, and its predictions have since been confirmed with great precision in both physics and chemistry.
The lecture introduces the fundamental principles of quantum physics and the existing technologies built on them - as well as the future technologies collectively called the "quantum revolution". Since the 1990s, large sums have been invested, both in Denmark and internationally, in the race to develop quantum computers, which exploit atomic quantum states to calculate many numbers simultaneously. The lecture explains how far we have come in building them and what they will be able to do when fully functional.
