Klaus Mølmer from Aarhus University explores quantum physics fundamentals and the emerging quantum revolution, from atomic paradoxes to practical quantum computing.
Klaus Mølmer (born 1963 in Vejle) is a professor of quantum optics at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, where he heads the quantum section. He is best known internationally for the Mølmer-Sørensen gate - a key two-qubit operation used in ion-trap quantum computers - and for foundational work on laser cooling and open quantum systems. Alongside his research, he is a prolific science communicator, reaching broad audiences through lectures, broadcasting and popular writing.
Mølmer received the Carlsberg Foundation Research Prize 2025 for his groundbreaking research in theoretical quantum optics and quantum mechanics; the prize was presented by the Queen at a ceremony at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek.
Mølmer gave a lecture at Chalmers University of Technology in Lund on Niels Bohr's role in the early history of quantum physics as part of the WACQT meeting series.
Mølmer served as a lecturer at FOF Emdrup with a lecture series based on the book 'Quantum Mechanics - the Wild World of Atoms'.
