Public Lecture in Natural Science: Seaweed

Marine biologist Annette Bruhn gives a lecture on seaweed - what it is, what it can do, and whether it really is the answer to the crises we hear about.

Seaweed forests along the coasts play a role similar to forests on land: they provide fish and small animals with both food and shelter, absorb nutrients and CO2, produce oxygen, and slow ocean acidification. Seaweed has also been used by humans for thousands of years as a raw material for food, animal feed, fertilizer, gunpowder, and materials - and today seaweed is being pointed to as a possible part of the solution to the climate, food, and biodiversity crisis. Whether this holds true is one of the questions the lecture addresses.

Bruhn reviews what seaweed and algae are biologically and how they differ from plants and animals. She also talks about cultivation - both in the sea and on land. There will be an opportunity to taste seaweed.

The lecture is an updated version of a lecture from autumn 2020 and takes place in the cinema at Nyborg Gymnasium.
