Public Lecture in Natural Science: Seaweed

Marine biologist Annette Bruhn presents a lecture on seaweed - a topic spanning from marine biology to climate debate. This is an updated version of a lecture from autumn 2020.

Seaweed forests along the world's coasts play a crucial role for marine life: they provide food and shelter for countless marine organisms, absorb nutrients and CO2, produce oxygen, and slow ocean acidification. Bruhn explains what seaweed and algae actually are, and how they biologically differ from both plants and animals.

Humans have used seaweed for millennia - as food, animal feed, fertilizer, gunpowder, and raw material. Today, seaweed is often highlighted as an answer to the climate crisis, food crisis, and biodiversity crisis. The lecture examines what substance there is to these claims and reviews how seaweed is cultivated - both in the sea and on land. There will be an opportunity to taste seaweed.
