Oil Painting for Beginners

A course for anyone wanting to try oil painting. You will paint your own still life while drawing inspiration from classical techniques in art history.

You will explore alla prima, where an entire painting is completed in one session without letting the paint layers dry between applications. Along the way, you'll see the different phases a painting goes through and learn methods you can use at home. The compositions vary in difficulty, so you can choose a subject that speaks to you. The class is limited to 10 participants, allowing time for personal guidance.

Your instructor is art historian Sofia Steinmetz, who studied at Copenhagen University. She has studied classical artistic techniques in Bologna, Barcelona, Athens, and Vienna, and has taught at Ordrupgaard, The Drawing Academy in Viborg, and Life Drawing Barcelona. For her, art history and practical experience go hand in hand, with room for depth, curiosity, and good stories.

At the end, you take home your own oil painting and have a fundamental understanding of oil painting techniques.
