Hip-Hop Murders: Myth, Media and Stop Volden!

In 1993, two knife murders shook Copenhagen - and the media were quick to link them to the emerging hip-hop culture. The term "hip-hop murders" spread, and young people in baggy trousers and caps suddenly faced fear and suspicion. But did the murders actually have anything to do with hip-hop?

That question is the focus of this AmarGetON! talk, which examines a period in Danish hip-hop history when media, politicians and the public helped portray hip-hop as something dangerous and violent. In the midst of it all, the grassroots movement Stop Volden emerged - driven by young people who identified with hip-hop culture and wanted to tell a different story.

The event brings together a number of people who were part of Stop Volden and contributed to the compilation of the same name. They tell the story from the inside: about the time, the atmosphere and the consequences.

The event is part of AmarGetON!, a cultural history festival about hip-hop culture at Copenhagen's libraries and cultural venues, supported by Amager Vest Local Committee, Amager Øst Local Committee and Vanløse Local Committee.
