Copenhagen Maqam Festival

Copenhagen Maqam Festival celebrates the maqam tradition - the modal music systems that have shaped musical cultures across the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey, Iran, the Balkans and surrounding regions for centuries. Running from 10-13 September 2026 at Valby Kulturhus, the festival features both concerts and workshops.

The programme spans traditional and contemporary interpretations of maqam music, bringing different regional traditions into dialogue. Featured artists include Egyptian singer Fatma Zidan and Bjonko - saxophonist and clarinetist recognised as one of Denmark's strongest interpreters of Balkan music. The festival also offers workshops in Oriental dance and percussion.
