Underwater kelp forests play a crucial role in marine ecosystems: the plants bind CO2, release oxygen, and counteract ocean acidification. Humans have harvested and used them for food, feed, and fertilizer for thousands of years, and today seaweed is being considered as a potential resource in addressing climate change, food security, and biodiversity loss.

This lecture examines what seaweed and algae actually are, how they are cultivated in practice, and what role they can play in more sustainable solutions across climate, nature, and food production.
