Matilde Kimer - Not Without a Fight

Journalist and author Matilde Kimer gives a lecture based on her book "Not Without a Fight" about the war in Ukraine.

It is just after five in the morning on February 24, 2022, when Kimer wakes up at a small hotel in Kharkiv to news of the Russian invasion. She had planned to travel home to Denmark that day to have a thyroid nodule removed. Instead, she calls her photographer Orest: "Have you heard? It has begun." Five minutes later, she is live on DR. She does not come home that day.

The book follows the war from the first intense days to exhaustion in the war's third and fourth years. Kimer portrays Ukrainians whose lives are inseparably bound to the war - the activist Anton is wounded and must seek exit permission to be operated on in Munich, photographer Orest exchanges his camera for a Kalashnikov. The narrative is also her own: the thyroid nodule is removed, but a year later she is diagnosed with bowel cancer, she is deported from Russia and loses her press accreditation in Ukraine.

Kimer has covered Russia and Ukraine for Danish Radio since her student days in St. Petersburg and is known, among other things, for reports on the Maidan Revolution in 2014, which she also writes about in the book The War Within.
