Writing Workshop: Fantasy and Magical Realism

Manuscript writer Trine Appel leads this workshop on fantasy and magical realism. She explores the differences between the two genres through her work on the trilogy 'Ildfuglen', and participants complete writing exercises focused on world building, concept, and character development. Appel also discusses credibility, personal voice in writing, and finding your own theme within a specific genre.

Trine Appel is a trained actor from the National Theatre School of Denmark and a manuscript writer from the Danish Film School. She has written 6 novels - 4 of them in magical realism with Danish history as the focal point - as well as scripts for, among others, Dag og nat season 2 (TV2), Min nye søster (DR), and the feature film C.4 - den sidste rejse. She is also working on a new novel series and a short film that she has written and directed herself.

The workshop is part of Copenhagen Public Libraries' monthly writing workshops: standalone two-hour events with presentations and writing exercises. It is free, aimed at adults, and requires registration on Billetto.

The workshop takes place in the Othello room at Christianshavns Bibliotek - from the entrance, follow the wall to the right through the library space and turn at the first corner, where Othello is located as a side room along the right wall. No computers are provided, so bring your own and/or paper and pen; desk space is limited, and you may need to work with your computer or paper in your lap - a writing board will be provided.
