Nordic Masterclass with Jorma Panula — Koncertsalen Alsion, Sønderborg

Free entry

The Nordic Masterclass returns to Sønderborg with a workshop for selected young conductors. They will work with the Sønderjylland Symphony Orchestra under the guidance of conducting legend and professor Jorma Panula, with Maria Badstue as assistant instructor.

The aim is to give young conductors practical experience in orchestra conducting at the highest level. Programme and participants will be announced later. Free admission.

About the venue: Koncertsalen Alsion

Koncertsalen Alsion in Sønderborg is the main concert hall for the whole of Southern Jutland, with seating for up to 988 guests. The programme ranges from classical music and opera to stand-up, comedy and lectures, with Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester as a regular resident ensemble. The hall is constructed as two concrete shells, one inside the other, keeping outside noise at bay and giving it acoustics that performers consistently praise. The 20-metre-wide stage can be adjusted hydraulically to depths of 6, 9 or 12 metres.

About: Jorma Panula

Jorma Panula is a Finnish conductor and conducting teacher, born in 1930, who has shaped Nordic orchestral life profoundly. For decades he taught at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where his students included Esa-Pekka Salonen and Jukka-Pekka Saraste. He has also held positions with several Nordic orchestras throughout his career.

About: Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester

One of Denmark's five regional orchestras, resident at Alsion in Sønderborg since 2007. Its 65 musicians cover all of Southern Jutland with around 150 concerts a year, and the orchestra maintains a long-standing cross-border partnership with the Schleswig-Holsteinisches Sinfonieorchester.

Christian Øland took on two chief conductor positions simultaneously from the 2025/26 season: Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester and Generalmusikdirektor for Theater Magdeburg.

Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester and Schleswig-Holsteinisches Sinfonieorchester performed a joint concert at Alsion with over 100 musicians on stage under conductor Harish Shankar.
