Maskarade

Carl Nielsen's Maskarade from 1906 - based on Ludvig Holberg's comedy from 1724 - is considered Denmark's national opera.

The opera comedy revolves around the generation gap: conflicting worldviews that collide. The old order and propriety are challenged by youth's desire to do things their own way. The conflict has not lost its relevance - today generations meet in disagreement over gender, culture, and sensitivity, and a generation of Jeronimusses shake their heads at young people shouting #metoo, while they themselves grew up in the 1970s' rebellion against authority.

There is an eternal gap between generations, and it will always be "another time..." when looking back on one's youth. Now it is the young people's turn to have their say and take the helm.
