Korngold's Violin Concerto

Violinist Josef Špaček returns to Sønderborg, where he last performed at the orchestra's season opening in its jubilee year 2023 with Nielsen's Violin Concerto. From 2011 to 2020, he served as concertmaster of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra - the youngest ever in that position - before leaving to pursue a solo career.

The evening's main work is Korngold's Violin Concerto. Korngold grew up as a child prodigy in Vienna, fled to the USA as Nazism spread, and composed film music during the war. He had decided not to write concert music until the world was free again, and the violin concerto thus became his first major concert work after World War II.
