WAITLIST! Rediscovered: Tove Jansson's 'The Summer Book' with Charlie McDowell

Tove Jansson's novel 'The Summer Book' from 1972 centres on a child and a grandmother spending a summer together on a small island in the Finnish archipelago. Their days consist of driftwood, weather and sea - and conversations about life and death. The novel is considered one of Jansson's masterworks and a classic of Nordic literature, though for many years it was overshadowed by the Moomins. The book was translated by Agnethe Dorph Stjernfelt.

American director Charlie McDowell has now adapted the novel into a film with Glenn Close in the role of the grandmother. He will be in conversation with cultural journalist Bodil Skovgaard Nielsen about his personal relationship to Jansson and 'The Summer Book', the novel's enduring relevance, and the process of bringing a literary classic to the screen.

The event is part of the Main Library's series Rediscovered, which highlights classics that have been overlooked or forgotten in Denmark. It takes place at Copenhagen's Main Library, 4th floor, Main Stage, 17:00-18:00. Free admission with ticket - the hall opens at 16:30, and views are limited from certain seats, so it pays to arrive early.
