Writing Workshop: Fantasy and Magical Realism — Christianshavns Bibliotek, Copenhagen
Free entry

Manuscript writer Trine Appel leads this two-hour workshop exploring fantasy and magical realism. She examines what distinguishes the two genres and draws on her own experience developing the trilogy 'Ildfuglen'. Participants work through writing exercises in world building, concept development, and character creation, while Appel addresses questions of credibility, voice, and finding the heart of your story - even within an established genre.

Appel trained as an actor at the National Theatre School of Denmark and studied screenwriting at the Danish Film School. She has written six novels - four of which blend magical realism with Danish history - plus screenplays for Dag og nat season 2 (TV2), Min nye søster (DR), and the feature film C.4 - den sidste rejse. She is currently working on a short film she wrote and directed, and is developing a new novel series.

The workshop is free, aimed at adults, and requires registration via Billetto. It is part of Copenhagen's Libraries' monthly series of standalone writing workshops across the city.

The room is called Othello: from the entrance, follow the right wall through the library space and turn at the first corner - Othello is a side room along the right wall. There are no computers available, so bring your own and/or paper and pen. Desk space is limited, and you may need to work with your computer or paper in your lap; the library provides writing boards as support. On the 4th floor you'll find a water station and a coffee machine - bring your own water bottle or jug. Questions can be directed to literature coordinator Poul-Louis at i343@kk.dk.
