We Were Once So Close

In late 1985, one of Danish rock's greatest successes disbanded - after years of dominating charts and venues with a blend of Nordic tone and Caribbean rhythms.

Tøsedrengene consisted of a tinsmith, a music teacher, two journalists, a postman, an eminent sound technician, and what the press called "a dark-skinned Barbados beauty". They brought 1970s fusion music into the 1980s and released six albums that were simultaneously complex, accessible, and raw - with lyrics that in direct and nuanced language described the human heart and relationships, in love as well as at work.

This lecture covers far more than just their hit songs. At its centre are three key figures: singer and lyricist Anne Dorte Michelsen, sound technician and composer Michael Bruun, and founder, composer and jack-of-all-trades Klaus Kjellerup.
