The Occupation 1940-45

A guided tour through Copenhagen's occupation history from April 1940 to May 1945. We follow the footsteps of the German occupation and invasion on 9 April, from the planning and landing at Langelinie, the attack on Kastellet, and the battles at Amalienborg. We examine the role of the king and government during the occupation, through the collaboration policy, and especially the traces of fighting during Operation Möve, when the police were taken by the Germans in 1944. We also pass a somewhat "forgotten" Holocaust memorial, a "stumbling stone", and hear about the Jewish action. We touch on the liberation days around 5 May 1945, which were very violent in the city centre, including the reckoning with Danish Nazis and collaborators, which we also hear about at Rådhuspladsen, the power centre of the German Nazis. We also look for where the German army, the feared secret police Gestapo, and Nazi leader in Denmark Werner Best were based, as well as several exciting events from the resistance movement's actions, the German "counter-terror", Schalburgtage, and we hear about Danish volunteers in Allied service.
