She was also the first woman ever to win a US Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album.

Carrington's early breakthrough came through collaborations with legends such as Wayne Shorter and Clark Terry, and later with Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, Dianne Reeves, and David Sanborn. Her influence on jazz extends far beyond the live stage: she is the founder and artistic director of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice and leads both the Berklee Beantown Jazz Festival and Detroit's Carr Center. She also brought her expertise to a global audience as a music consultant on Disney/Pixar's acclaimed film Soul, where she helped shape the musical authenticity of the film's jazz universe.
