Raku Workshop with Manuel Canu, 02.09 + 19.09

This two-day workshop introduces raku - a firing technique rooted in centuries-old Japanese ceramic tradition. Limited to 8 participants, who will receive practical information by email before the course begins.

Day 1 - Modelling: 2 September 2026, 17:00-21:00
Manuel Canu introduces various modelling techniques and demonstrates how to use them to create both sculptural and functional objects. This day takes place in the ceramic studio on the 4th floor, Vesterbro Library and Cultural Centre, Lyrskovgade 2-4.

Day 2 - Glazing and Raku Firing: 19 September 2026, 10:00-17:00
The day begins with decoration and glazing, concluding with firing in raku gas kilns. The glowing pieces are removed at 1000 degrees and placed in sawdust: the sudden temperature change causes the glaze to crackle, and the charcoal colours the unglazed cracks black. With copper glazes, the technique can also produce metallic surfaces. Finally, the pieces are dipped in cold water and scrubbed clean - only then does the result reveal itself. This day takes place outdoors in the courtyard behind Cph Skatepark, Enghavevej 80, 2450 Copenhagen V.

Manuel Canu is a trained ceramic designer who has worked with sculptural ceramics for many years, exhibiting internationally and having studied and worked in England. He now runs a ceramic studio and gallery in Copenhagen together with a group of artists.

The course costs 880 kr., including 2 kg of clay and a wide selection of glazes. Tickets cannot be refunded from 14 days before the course starts. Wear practical clothing that tolerates smoke and suits the weather - closed shoes are recommended. Bring your own food and drink, and something to transport the finished pieces in.
