Feminist Classics Salon: Sigrid Adamsson on "Nothing Grows from Moonlight" by Torborg Nedreaas — Tranquebar Boghandel, Copenhagen

We consider Sigrid Adamsson one of this year's finest debut authors. She gained recognition with her novel "The Clouds" - a beautiful and painful story about friendship, love, and loss. Beyond her work as a writer, Sigrid is also a critic at Politiken and a literary translator. We are delighted to announce that Sigrid will host Tranquebar's next feminist classics salon on Monday, September 7th. This salon will explore one of Sigrid's favorite classics: "Nothing Grows from Moonlight" by Norwegian author Torborg Nedreaas. We are thrilled with this choice - Nedreaas is also one of Tranquebar's great favorites, and we dare call her Norway's "Tove Ditlevsen" without exaggeration. We genuinely believe there is no greater compliment for a writer.

In "Nothing Grows from Moonlight," the female protagonist tells her life story to a stranger over the course of a single night. It is a story of unhappy love that began when she was 15 and entered into a secret sexual relationship with her schoolteacher. Her infatuation grows, and at 17, she becomes pregnant for the first time but undergoes an illegal abortion - the first of many. Written in 1947, the novel depicts the brutality of illegal abortion and how many abortions occur not by women's choice, but because men, religion, and capitalism dictate it. It is a story about women's right to control their own bodies - a subject that remains as vital today as it was in 1947.

We look forward to exploring this feminist classic with you and with Sigrid Adamsson! Ticket price: 100 kr. Doors open at 18:30, and Sigrid will speak from 19:00 to 20:00.
