Science & Cocktails in X31: The Evolutionary Origins of a Good Society

Science and Cocktails presents a lecture by sociologist and Yale University professor Nicholas A. Christakis, author of Blueprint: The Evolutionary Origins of a Good Society. He explores why societies around the world resemble each other so strikingly - and what our biological heritage has to do with it.

Researchers and citizens often focus on the dark side of our biological nature: aggression, cruelty, prejudice, and self-interest. But natural selection has also equipped us with the capacity for love, friendship, cooperation, and knowledge transmission. Christakis uses examples from historical and contemporary cultures, shipwreck societies, utopian communes, villages, online communities, and even the social structures of elephants and dolphins to show that we - despite a violent human history - cannot escape our social blueprint for goodness.

Tickets: Seats are paid. Standing room is free and valid until 20:00 - you must arrive by then, but can stay for the entire evening. After 20:00, entry is on a first-come, first-served basis.
